Interferons and Receptors (IFN)

Interferons (IFNs) are natural substances made by white blood cells and other cells to help the body's immune system combat infection and diseases like cancer. These proteins can also be produced in the laboratory for use in various researches. As both cytokines and immunomodulating agents, IFNs exhibit anti-viral, anti-tumor, and immunomodulatory functions.

IFNs are organized into three types according to their corresponding receptor: type I, type II, and type III. IFN-α and IFN-β are the most prominent members of type I IFNs, primarily produced by pathogenesis-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Type II IFNs have only one type, IFN-γ, which is produced by various immune system cells. Type III IFNs are mainly produced by epithelial cells in non-hematopoietic cells, though the exact mechanism of their production is still under investigation. Each type of IFN binds to different compositions of heterodimeric receptor complexes, leading to distinct intracellular signaling pathways. These pathways are conducted through the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathways.
