Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) is a multifunctional cytokine protein that is widely involved in biological processes such as cell growth, differentiation, and migration. HGF was originally discovered to have the ability to proliferate and regenerate liver cells, hence its name. However, its effects are not limited to the liver but play important roles in multiple tissues and organs.
HGF initiates complex signaling pathways mainly by binding to its receptor, c-Met (a tyrosine kinase receptor). This results in the activation of multiple signaling molecules within the cell, thereby regulating cell survival, proliferation, and migration. Under normal physiological conditions, HGF plays a key role in tissue repair and regeneration, especially during injury and wound healing.
Abnormal expression of HGF is associated with a variety of diseases, including cancer, inflammatory diseases, and tissue fibrosis. In cancer, excessive activation of the HGF/c-Met signaling pathway is closely related to tumor occurrence, development, and metastasis. Therefore, HGF has become an important research object in cancer treatment research.
