Background | BMP4 is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family that is part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. BMP4 plays an important role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans and a reduction in expression has been associated with a variety of bone diseases, including the heritable disorder Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (1). BMP4 acts as a novel, noncytotoxic therapeutic effector that is used to prevent growth and recurrence of glioblastomas in humans (2). |
