Target Details
Target Function | Retinol-binding protein that mediates retinol transport in blood plasma. Delivers retinol from the liver stores to the peripheral tissues. Transfers the bound all-trans retinol to STRA6, that then facilitates retinol transport across the cell membrane. |
Subcellular Location | Secreted. |
Protein Families | Calycin superfamily, Lipocalin family |
Database References | |
Tissue Specificity | Detected in blood plasma (at protein level). |
Gene Functions References
- RBP4 levels increased by 2-fold in the serum of nonobese Goto-Kakizaki rats but not high-fat diet fed rats. PMID: 26923513
- plasma RBP4 concentrations were associated with cardiovascular disease. In addition, RBP4 increases the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells induced by hyperinsulinism via activation of MAPK signaling pathway PMID: 24888764
- Retinol binding protein 4 promotes hyperinsulinisminduced proliferation of rat aortic smooth muscle cells. PMID: 24604418
- Decreased trophoblast expression of retinol transport proteins suggest that nitrofen may interfere with the fetal retinol transport resulting in reduced pulmonary RBP and TTR levels and causing pulmonary hypoplasia in CDH. PMID: 22015466
- Steatotic liver grafts are more predisposed to down-regulate retinol-binding protein 4 and overexpress proliferator-activated receptor-gamma. PMID: 21487070
- RBP4 contributes to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in spontaneously hypertensive rats. PMID: 21365528
- Increases in RBP4 or Nampt/visfatin do not accompany obesity and insulin resistance in the models examined. PMID: 18401839
