Background | STK36 is a member of the serine/threonine kinase family and is similar to a protein which plays a key role in the Hedgehog signaling pathway. STK36 is a positive regulator of the GLI zinc-finger transcription factors and controls the activity of GLI1 and GLI2 by opposing the effect of SUFU (1). STK36 is highly expressed in fetal lung and adult testis (2). STK36 is a target for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers since the Hedgehog signaling pathway is frequently activated in certain kinds of gastrointestinal cancers. Defects in the STK36 gene may lead to congenital hydrocephalus, possibly due to a functional defect in motile cilia. |
